Getting started

Simply Read offers two ways to read. The guided speed reader paces you through the text, while the self-paced eBook reader lets you scroll or page through it yourself. There is no account and no sign-up, so you can start straight away.

  • Choose a book: start with one of the built-in classics, browse the free Cloud Library, or import one of your own.
  • Import your own: add any plain-text (.txt) file from the Files app. See the format guide to learn how the app detects chapters, sentences and paragraphs.
  • Pick a mode on the book screen: Guided for a paced, word-by-word read, or eBook for a self-paced read on your own layout.

Reading modes

Guided reading moves you through the text at a words-per-minute (WPM) pace you choose, highlighting as it goes. Start gently and build up, or jump straight past 350 WPM if you are speed reading. The pace slider is always one tap away.

The eBook reader is self-paced: turn pages, or switch on continuous scrolling in Settings, and read in your own time.

Dyslexia-friendly options live in the eBook reader’s “Aa” menu. Choose from five paper tints (Default, Sepia, Warm Amber, Cream and Slate Dark) to cut glare, or adjust the text size. Bionic Reading bolds the leading letters of each word to help guide your eye along the line. The guided reader has its own highlighting instead.

Eye tracking and your data

On an iPhone or iPad with a TrueDepth (Face ID) camera, Simply Read can optionally watch where your eyes move as you read in guided mode, to show attention and focus insights. It needs your camera permission and is entirely optional. Guided and eBook reading both work fully without it.

Eye tracking runs on-device using Apple’s ARKit. We do not record or save video or images of your face, and nothing is transmitted anywhere. We analyse the camera feed in the moment to produce numeric metrics, and store them only on your device.

A TrueDepth camera unlocks attention and state stats. A 120Hz ProMotion display additionally unlocks the full Reading Profile (regression ratio, visual span and fixation duration). Any screening indicator or insight the app shows is an estimate for informational and reading-support purposes only, not a medical diagnosis. Full detail is in our Privacy Policy.

Premium, subscriptions and refunds

Guided and eBook reading, the built-in classics, the Cloud Library, Bionic Reading and paper tints, bookmarks and daily goals are all free. Simply Read Premium unlocks the full Reading Profile, your complete insights history, and the PDF specialist report. It is available as an annual subscription (US$29.99/yr, with a 7-day free trial) or as a one-time lifetime purchase (US$59.99 once). Prices are shown in US dollars and may vary by region. The App Store shows the final price in your own currency before you buy.

  1. Cancel the annual subscription at any time in Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your device. Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal to avoid the next charge. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. A lifetime purchase has nothing to cancel.
  2. Restore Premium on a new device by signing in with the same Apple ID you originally used, then choosing Restore Purchases on the paywall or in the app’s Settings.
  3. Refunds are handled by Apple. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, choose “Request a refund”, and select your Simply Read purchase.

Cloud Library and imports

The Cloud Library is a free, growing catalogue of classic books, banded by age (Under 13, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, and 18+) with genre tags, so you can browse something age-appropriate. We verify and save downloads to your device. Once downloaded, a book stays available offline.

Running low on space, or just tidying up? Delete a downloaded book from your library at any time and re-download it later at no extra cost.

You can also bring your own books: import any plain-text (.txt) file, including ones from Project Gutenberg. See the format guide to learn how to format a file so the app detects chapters, sentences and paragraphs correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Is Simply Read free, and what does Premium unlock?

Guided and eBook reading, the built-in classics, the Cloud Library, Bionic Reading, paper tints, bookmarks and daily goals are all free, with no account needed. Simply Read Premium is optional, and adds the full Reading Profile, your complete insights history, and the PDF specialist report. It is available as an annual subscription with a 7-day free trial, or as a one-time lifetime purchase.

What does eye tracking do, and does it record video?

With your permission, Simply Read uses your device’s camera to watch where your eyes move as you read, showing attention and focus insights. It never records or saves video or images. We analyse the camera feed on-device, in the moment, and store only numeric results, such as attention state or oculomotor metrics, on your device. Nothing is uploaded anywhere. Eye tracking is entirely optional. Both reading modes work fully without it.

What do I need to use eye tracking?

Simply Read runs on any device with iOS 17 or later. Eye tracking additionally needs a TrueDepth (Face ID) camera. Without one, guided and eBook reading both work fully, just without attention insights. With a TrueDepth camera you get attention and state stats. On a 120Hz ProMotion display you also get the full Reading Profile, including regression ratio, visual span and fixation duration.

Does Simply Read work offline?

Yes. The built-in classics, any book you import, and anything you have downloaded from the Cloud Library are all stored on your device and open without an internet connection. You only need a connection to browse or download new Cloud Library titles, or to manage a Premium subscription.

What file formats can I import?

Simply Read reads plain-text (.txt) files, including books downloaded from Project Gutenberg. See the format guide to learn how to lay out chapters, sentences and paragraphs so the app detects them correctly.

How does the Cloud Library’s age banding work?

The Cloud Library is a free, growing catalogue of classic books, split into four age bands (Under 13, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, and 18+) with genre tags, so you can filter to something age-appropriate. Downloaded books stay available offline. Delete one to free up space, and re-download it later at no extra cost.

What is Bionic Reading?

Bionic Reading bolds the leading letters of each word, giving your eye a fixation point to guide it along the line. It is available in the eBook reader’s “Aa” menu, alongside text size and five paper tints (Default, Sepia, Warm Amber, Cream and Slate Dark). The guided reader has its own highlighting instead.

Is Simply Read good for dyslexia or other reading differences?

Many readers find the paced guided mode, Bionic Reading and the paper tints genuinely helpful for focus and flow. The optional eye-tracking insights can also highlight attention patterns worth discussing with a specialist. That said, Simply Read is not a medical device. It does not diagnose dyslexia or any other condition, and any screening indicator the app shows is informational only. Speak to a qualified professional for an assessment.

Is Simply Read suitable for children?

Yes. The app carries a 4+ age rating, with no account, no ads and no third-party tracking. The Cloud Library’s age bands and parental content filter help you choose age-appropriate books. Eye tracking stays off until camera permission is actively granted. A parent or guardian can review it, or turn it off, at any time in Settings.

How do I delete my data?

Your books, settings, reading position and any eye-tracking history are stored on your device, so deleting them is self-service. Remove individual sessions or bookmarks in the app, or delete the app to remove everything at once. Because we do not hold a copy of this data, we cannot delete it on your behalf.

How do I cancel my subscription or get a refund?

Manage or cancel the annual subscription in Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your device. Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal to avoid the next charge. A lifetime purchase has nothing to cancel. Refunds are handled by Apple. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and select your Simply Read purchase.

How do I restore Premium on a new device?

Sign in with the same Apple ID you used for your original purchase, open Simply Read, and choose Restore Purchases from the paywall or from Settings. Your Premium entitlement is restored automatically, at no extra charge.

What does Simply Read use Game Center for?

Signing in to Game Center is optional, and available from Settings. It unlocks achievements and leaderboards tied to your reading streaks and words read. Apple handles Game Center entirely, so you can read without ever signing in.
